Recognised Among Kenya's Top Interior Designers — What That Means to Us

Earlier this year, proBuilders Kenya — a widely read resource for homeowners, developers, and built environment professionals across the country — published their list of the Top Interior Design Companies in Kenya. Terry Interior Designs appeared on it.
We do not collect accolades for display. But when an independent platform evaluating the industry places you on a list like this, it is worth pausing to understand why — not to celebrate, but because the reasons say something useful about how we work.
proBuilders described us this way:
"The company prides itself on delivering a personalised approach, unique designs, and meticulous attention to detail — guaranteeing they not only meet but exceed the expectations of their diverse range of valued clients."
Three phrases. Each one points to something we have built deliberately, over 25 years of practice. Here is what they actually mean on the inside of this firm.
Personalised Approach
No two commissions are the same, and not because every client has a different aesthetic. They have different lives. A household with young children lives in their living room differently to a couple who travel frequently and return to a home that needs to feel immediately restorative. A hospitality operator has noise requirements, durability thresholds, and brand parameters that have nothing to do with domestic comfort. A government institution has compliance considerations alongside the desire to project credibility and care.
A personalised approach means we start by listening — not presenting. Before any design work begins, we understand the brief in full: how the space is used, what is failing, what has been tried, what the budget truly looks like, and what success means to the person who will live or work in that space for the next decade. The design that follows is built around that understanding, not adapted from a previous project that looked similar on paper.
Unique Designs
We do not have a signature style in the sense of a visual formula we apply to every brief. What we have is a disciplined design process that produces work which is resolved — spatially, technically, and aesthetically — for its specific context.
East African interiors have their own logic: the quality of equatorial light, the relationship between indoor and outdoor living, the material traditions that are genuinely local and the international supply lines that bring world-class furniture and finishes to Nairobi. We know how to work within all of this. The result is that our projects do not look imported. They look like themselves — like spaces that belong exactly where they are.
Uniqueness, in our practice, is not a creative gesture. It is the outcome of designing for a real brief in a real place, without shortcuts.
Meticulous Attention to Detail
Detail is where design lives or dies. The curtain heading that sits one centimetre too low. The tile grout line that drifts over a twelve-metre run. The paint finish that reads beautifully in direct light and shows every mark in the afternoon. The drawer that catches. The seam that pulls.
We carry out our own fabrication for soft furnishings and joinery. We manage our own installation. We do not hand off the final stage of a project to a subcontractor who was not part of the design conversation — because that handoff is where the detail is lost. When the same team that specified the work also installs it, accountability is not distributed across a chain of contractors. It sits with us, completely, until the project is finished to our standard — which is the standard the brief deserved from the beginning.
Meeting and Exceeding Expectations
The honest version of this is: expectations are only exceeded when they are fully understood first. Many clients arrive at the end of a project to discover that what was delivered was technically correct but not what they had in mind — because the brief was never properly interrogated, or because changes made mid-project were never fully reconciled with the original intent.
We avoid this through process. Every project has a defined scope, agreed before work begins. Changes are documented and approved before they affect cost or programme. The client is never surprised by an invoice or a finish they didn't specify. That discipline — which requires more rigour from us, not less — is what creates the space to exceed expectations rather than simply fulfil them.
Twenty-Five Years of This
Recognitions like this one from proBuilders are a measure of consistency — not of a single outstanding project, but of a standard maintained across hundreds of them. Hotels, embassies, university facilities, private residences, restaurants, and institutional spaces across Kenya and the wider East African region. Each one approached as if it were the only one.
That is not a line. It is the only way we know how to work.
